Institutional arbitration means that the proceedings are administered by an organization, usually in accordance with its own rules of arbitration.
Ad hoc arbitration means that there is no formal administration by any established arbitral agency; instead the parties have opted to create their own procedures for a given arbitration.
Though ad hoc arbitration may be more flexible, lower cost, speedier compared with institutional arbitration, institutional arbitration is still more popular than ad hoc arbitration. And the ad hoc arbitration award is not enforceable in some countries as well. China does not recognize the ad hoc arbitration.
